5 Tips to Get Back on Track

This year the holidays did me in.

After two years of shutdowns and shut-ins, we were all anxious to gather and celebrate. Some of us went overboard. I know I did.

It doesn’t take much of a change in your routine to derail you from your faithful daily schedule, and getting back on track isn’t always easy.

And guess what?

The longer you procrastinate, the harder it gets.

5 Tips to Get Back in the Groove

  1. Start! Don’t choose a date in the future. Start right now. We are all guilty of waiting until Monday morning or after our kid’s birthday party or after our anniversary weekend or any random thing which actually doubles as an excuse. But when we do this, we aren’t exactly setting a start date. We are procrastinating. Imagine if you started today instead of after the wedding you’re going to in 3 weeks. You will have THREE weeks of feeling good about yourself again instead of 3 weeks of regret. Nike says just do it. They’re right.
  2. Grab an accountability partner. Ideally, find someone who wants the same outcome as you do. Together, you can encourage, help each other stay positive and motivated, and compare and track your progress. Plus, if one of you starts to fall out of line, the other will be there to guide you back.
  3. Set a small goal. Be sure it’s a bit of a stretch yet attainable. This way, you won’t be discouraged about chasing something that seems far from your reach, AND when you hit it, you can celebrate and up the ante!
  4. Shout out your intentions! Please don’t keep it a secret. If more people know you are going to the gym every day, not drinking, giving up carbs, or trying to lose 10 pounds, etc., you will have more support and far less sabotage.
  5. Do at least ONE thing every single day. Say your goal is to lose the 10 pounds you gained over the holidays. Your plan may be to drink protein shakes, get to the gym, drink more water, and get 8 hours of sleep. If all you can manage on a particular day is to get to the gym, YAY! We notoriously throw in the towel on “D” when we cannot complete A, B, and C. Remember that ONE is better than NONE!

The worst thing you can do is keep putting off the inevitable.

It’s not going to get any easier.

Start today.
